1. Clean your teeth after eating by toothbrush and dental 
floss. 
2. Young children need help to clean their teeth properly. 
3. Visit the dentist regularly. Periodontal disease of gums 
is common in adults and in older people. The dentist can 
remove plaque from teeth, reducing the number of bacteria. 
4. Eating sweetened cereals dry is bad for teeth, always 
add milk. 
5. Drinking frequent cups of tea or coffee with sugar added 
will increase the risk ofteeth decay. 
6. When less saliva is available on very hot days, one should 
not consume foods containing sugars that stick in the teeth. 
7. Chewable vitamin C tablets with or without sugar are acidic 
and are a hazard for not only children’s teeth but also to 
adult's teeth. Do not use lemon juice for whitening because 
vitamin C will cause the teeth to lose calcium damaging teeth 
quicker than anything else. 
8. Don't give babies a bottle containing milk, juice or a 
formula in bed, this is a not good for their teeth. The sugars 
from milk or juice around the mouth for long periods can lead 
to decay in a baby’s little teeth. 
9. Prolonged breast feeding with small feeds every few minutes 
can also lead to tooth decay. 
10. When babies get teeth, it is important to give them foods 
to chew.
11. When to Eat:

Don't eat all the times. Leave at least 2-3 hours between meals 
or snacks. This allows the acid level in the mouth to fall and 
also gives saliva a chance to counteract the effect of acid and 
repair tooth enamel. 

Brush your teeth after eating food that are not good for teeth. 
Or eating food at times when you can brush your teeth soon
afterwards. 

12. Drinks:

Drinks (normal or diet) such as coke, pepsi, sport drinks and 
fruit juices though don’t stick in the teeth but they are 
highly acidic. 

The diet drinks are not high risk for dental cavities, but the 
tooth enamel may be affected due to their high acid levels. 

Sipping a soft drink or a sports drink every few minutes is 
hazardous, it is best to finish the whole drink in one go, then 
rinse your mouth thoroughly with plain water to remove the acid. 
Don't brush your teeth after a soft drink, as it can damage the 
tooth enamel due to etching. 

13. Ideas For Snacks

Sweets and other sticky carbohydrate foods are not suitable as 
snacks, especially when you can not brush soon after. 

Fresh fruit 

Glass of milk, soy milk or buttermilk 

Natural yogurt with fresh fruit 

Smoothies made with milk, yogurt and fruits 

Wholewheat breakfast biscuits with milk 

Cheese or cheese sticks 

Hot soups in winter 

14. Eating Habits For Good Teeth

Drink plenty of water daily. 

Eat fiber-rich raw foods, which massage the gums and cleans the 
teeth. Raw foods also increase salivation, which neutralises 
acids and alkalis within the mouth. You may grate, dice, ground, 
blend, or juice raw foods. Good raw foods to eat are apple, 
carrot, radish, cucumber, orange, pear, beetroot, watermelon, 
etc. eat some raw food after every meals. This will help clean 
your teeth and gums due to high water content. However, after 
eating citrus fruits or juices, rinse your mouth with water, as 
the acids present in them can weaken enamel. 

Eat sprouts. 

Eat proteins. 

15. Proper Brushing

The minimum time you should spend brushing your teeth is 2 
minutes twice a day. Here are some tips on how to brush 
properly: 

1) Hold your brush at a 45-degree angle against your gumline. 
Gently brush from where the tooth and gum meet to the chewing 
surface in short (about half-a-tooth-wide) strokes. Brushing 
too hard can cause receding gums, tooth sensitivity, and, over 
time, loose teeth. 
2) Use the same method to brush all outside and inside surfaces 
of your teeth. 
3) To clean the chewing surfaces of your teeth, use short 
sweeping strokes, tipping the bristles into the pits and 
crevices. 
4) To clean the inside surfaces of your top and bottom front 
teeth and gums, hold the brush almost vertical. With back and 
forth motions, bring the front part of the brush over the 
teeth and gums. 5) Using a forward-sweeping motion, gently 
brush your tongue and the roof of your mouth to remove the 
decay-causing bacteria that exist in these places. 
6) Use an egg timer or play a favorite song while brushing 
your teeth to get used to brushing for a full 2 to 3 minutes. 
Some electronic toothbrushes have timers that let you know 
when 2 minutes are up.
